What is the difference between a vector file and a pixel file?
A vector file can be infinitely enlarged or reduced without quality loss. Have you ever tried to stretch a pixel image? With a blocky and vague result? Online, you often find pixel images and logos that are not optimally sharp. The most common pixel images have the file types JPG, PNG, GIF, and BMP. These file types are regularly described as .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .bmp. Vector images have the following file types: EPS, PDF, or AI. Vector also has the less common file type SVG. These vector file formats are regularly described as .ai, .eps, .pdf, and .svg.
Below you'll find an illustrated image in which you can see the difference between a raster image / pixel file and a vector image / vector file. You see a logo, which at first glance looks fine, but once enlarged there is definitely a difference. When enlarging a vector file, this doesn't come at the expense of the quality of your image. When enlarging a pixel file, the individual pixels of the image become clearly visible. A stair-step effect occurs.
