What is EPS?

EPS is an abbreviation and stands for Encapsulated Postscript. Actually, an EPS is a file that is mainly used in the graphics industry by print shops and designers. An EPS file is built in a special way, the file consists of so-called vector information. That vector information in turn consists of lines between anchor points. That brings a great advantage. When the EPS logo is enlarged, you will always see the same sharp quality with such a file. If your logo is saved as a pixel file, you will see the pixels when you enlarge such a file. The pixels are, simply put, the 'colored dots (pixels)' from which the image is built.

With an EPS file, it's different, that's a vector file. So when the printer asks for an EPS logo, he or she actually means a vector file.

Incidentally, there's nothing wrong with a pixel file as long as you use it for digital purposes such as on a website or in a PowerPoint presentation. But for print work, an EPS file is a requirement to look good as a company. Incidentally, in the case of print work, a print shop may also ask for a vector file. A vector file is basically the same as an EPS file. How does that work then?

Vector file

A vector file is the collective name for files that are saved as vector and therefore, as we just mentioned, are built from anchor points and lines instead of so-called pixels. An EPS file is a vector file and cannot simply be opened by any graphics program. You often need specialized graphics software to save or edit an image as an EPS file, for example. Whether it concerns converting photos or illustrations to an EPS file, you need separate software for that. But what's the best thing to do if you want to create an EPS logo?

Creating an EPS logo

You can create an EPS logo in different ways. There are various websites that can automatically convert your pixel file (for example a JPG file) to an EPS file. The big disadvantage of such an automated process is that no final check will take place. The quality is therefore often disappointing. And if you want to have multiple files converted to an EPS logo, you often need to take out a subscription. Also, with such websites, the final result won't always be anything to write home about. But are there other ways to create an EPS logo then?

Other ways

There are still other ways to create an EPS logo, you might wonder? What we often see happening is that people give a pixel file a different extension, so instead of .JPG, an .EPS extension. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that simply. Saving a file as an EPS file won't work. The file in question is still not a vector file and the structure of the file is also still that of a pixel file. When you open such a file and enlarge it, you'll see that the image is still a pixel file.

Creating an EPS logo actually comes down to digitally tracing, so by hand, the relevant image or logo. Areas are created or colored in and lines are traced. And to do that properly, you need to use professional software. An example of such specialized software is Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator

Most graphic specialists use a package like Adobe Illustrator to create an EPS logo. A specialized and professional package with truly a sea of possibilities and functions. And the tracing of the image is done entirely by hand in such a package. You'll understand that's a very careful and very time-consuming job, a job you can't just do in an afternoon. And we have to be honest, Adobe Illustrator has a fairly hefty subscription price.

Is an EPS logo necessary?

Now that we've lined up a number of possibilities for you, you might wonder whether it's necessary to have an EPS logo made from your logo. A pixel file of your logo, or of other illustrations, can work fine on a website. But, as we mentioned earlier, if you're going to have these printed, and even more so, enlarged, then an EPS file really has to be made from your logo. No matter how large your logo is printed, the quality of the logo will always be razor-sharp and clear. So if you want to look good with your company on billboards, banners, and such, an EPS logo is necessary.
