Encapsulated PostScript
First something about the abbreviation. The abbreviation EPS stands for Encapsulated PostScript and is a graphic file in the PostScript language. A bit of a technical story, but a file in EPS format normally contains an image and has extra parameters that ensure this image can be included in a PostScript document. The bottom line is that an EPS file is a graphic file. Such a file is therefore mainly used by professionals in the graphics industry. EPS files are created and edited in special graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator and QuarkXpress. Software programs that require many years of experience and are certainly not so intuitive that you'll master them in an afternoon.
Vector information
An EPS file is therefore a graphic file, but that's not all. A file in EPS format is built from so-called vector information, which is why an EPS file is also called a vector file. Such a file is built from vectors and vectors are paths, or lines, defined by a start and end point, or anchor points. The great advantage of such a file structure is that it can be infinitely enlarged without any compromises in quality.
Files in EPS format therefore come in particularly handy when an image needs to be razor-sharp and must be able to be enlarged without limits. You can think of vehicle lettering and facade lettering but also banners, flags, and sponsor boards.
When a vector file
How do you check if you have an EPS file, or a vector file? You do that in a simple way by looking at the file extension. Is the extension JPG, GIF, PSD, TIFF, BMP, or for example PNG? Then you can be sure that you don't have a file built from vector information. Does the file have an extension like EPS, or for example AI or SVG, then you can be pretty sure that the file is built from vector information.
Editing files
Files in EPS format cannot simply be opened in any random program, as we saw earlier. You need specialized software for that. Most of this software is paid, but there are also free versions, such as Inkscape. As we mentioned earlier, for such software it does apply that they are not simple to use and easy to learn. The learning curve is steep and working with such a package is not something you'll master in an afternoon.
Converting to EPS format
Do you have files in a format other than EPS format and do you want to use them for print work or, for example, advertising on cars? Then these files will first have to be converted to EPS format. As we said earlier, an EPS file is also called a vector file and the advantage of such a file is that it can be enlarged without any quality loss.
Converting to a vector file, for example in EPS format, is quite a difficult and time-consuming job. We already said that the packages in which you can do this are not simple to use, furthermore the conversion is simply handwork. The image is literally traced by hand on the computer and then filled in with color. Converting your own files to EPS format is really not recommended, it can cost a lot of money and cause frustration.
Have it converted online
There are also websites where you can have your files converted to EPS format files. You upload the files you want to have converted, press a few buttons, and have your files in the EPS format you want.
Unfortunately, it is the case that with such websites that run this process automatically, the quality of the final result always leaves something to be desired. This is mainly because no human hands are involved and therefore no final check takes place, and if you're not satisfied at some point, the customer service at these websites always leaves something to be desired. That leaves the question, of course, how can you best convert illustrations, a logo, or a photo to a file in EPS format? Should you then buy an expensive software package and take an Adobe Illustrator course?
Work for specialists
Fortunately, all that is not necessary. Converting, for example, digital illustrations to illustrations in EPS format is best simply outsourced to people who do this as their daily work. Like the specialists at Logo in Vector. For a small investment, we convert your logo, photo, or illustration to a vector file of the highest quality.
The people at Logo in Vector trace your existing logo or other illustration one-on-one by hand in vector with professional software such as Adobe Illustrator.
